Smell training
Olfactory training is a method to improve the sense of smell, for example in case of anosmia (the complete loss of the sense of smell) or hyposmia (reduced sense of smell). At KNO-winkel we offer various smell training sets.
What does smell training entail?
Smell training can be useful to use for loss of smell. It is a process of trying to improve or restore the sense of smell.
With smell training, the olfactory nerves in your nose are stimulated. This encourages the nerves to recover. You immediately train the brain to recognize odors (correctly) again.
Please note: smell training does not guarantee that the sense of smell will (partially) return.
Why are there different smell training sets available?
Dos Medical's smell training includes several sets. The reason for this is that you need to continue smell training for at least 24 weeks. After 12 weeks you switch from set 1 to set 2, which contains four new scents. If further training is required, a set 3 is still available.
The instructions for use describe the steps involved in smell training and how to carry them out.
Who benefits from smell training?
Smell training can be useful for people who suffer from loss of smell or reduced sense of smell. Research shows that smell training can be especially effective in patients with loss of smell due to an upper respiratory infection (such as with COVID-19), loss of smell after a wound to the head or loss of smell due to a cause that is not yet known.
So smell training is not always useful for every cause. Read more about it on the blog page: What is an olfactory disorder?
